Nature in conflict: ecosystem services versus extreme weather events

Scientists Antonio Camacho and Samira Khodayar will analyze the fundamental causes of extreme weather events, exploring how climate change and ecological processes influence their frequency and intensity. In addition, they will address strategies to mitigate their impacts using the very resources that nature provides. Through an ecosystem-based approach, they will highlight how wetlands, forests, and other natural environments act as natural barriers, regulating the water cycle, absorbing carbon, and protecting communities from floods, droughts, and heat waves.

Antonio Camacho González (Valencia, 1965) holds a doctorate in Biological Sciences and is a professor of Ecology at the University of Valencia, where he leads the Limnology group of the Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology. His research focuses on the microbial ecology and biogeochemistry of continental aquatic ecosystems, with special emphasis on climate change and biogeochemical processes. He has led several Antarctic expeditions and published more than a hundred scientific papers. Between 2010 and 2018, he presided over the Iberian Association of Limnology, and has held prominent positions in the European Academy of Sciences and the European Federation of Freshwater Sciences. In addition, he collaborates with international organizations such as the IPCC and UNESCO on issues related to climate change and environmental sustainability.

Samira Khodayar Pardo holds a doctorate in Physics from the University of Karlsruhe and currently coordinates the Meteorology and Climatology area at the Center for Mediterranean Environmental Studies (CEAM). Her research focuses on the meteorology and climatology of the Mediterranean, focusing on the hydrological cycle and the analysis of extreme meteorological phenomena in the context of climate change. She employs a multidisciplinary approach that integrates advanced observation data, specific field experiments, and high-resolution numerical modeling. In recognition of her work, she received the Levante-EMV Environment Award in 2022. In addition, she has been included in the list of "Influential Women in the Valencian Community" for her impact and leadership in the scientific field.
