Oceanogràfic Sustainability

Reducing dependence on the marine environment

It is common for modern aquariums to have breeding programs in controlled conditions to preserve the future of biological collections.

However, many marine centers still capture some species from the wild, especially fish, to maintain their collections.

In line with the Oceanogràfic's commitment to reduce its impact on the ocean, we are moving towards sustainability through new breeding programs for species acquired from nature.

These programs will not only strengthen the aquarium's collections, but will also support reintroduction projects for vulnerable or endangered species. Thus, this program will contribute to reducing the Oceanogràfic's dependence on the marine environment.

Lines

  • Breeding program for species in a controlled environment

This line seeks to expand the breeding in a controlled environment of species already reproduced in the Oceanogràfic of the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, such as sharks, stingrays, penguins, dolphins, sea lions or aquatic birds.

In addition, it is intended to promote the reproduction of species for self-sufficiency and exchange with other aquariums, focusing on those listed as threatened.

  • Reforestation in the primary forest of Mata Atlántica (Argentina) with the Nature and Man Foundation

In this line of action, the Oceanogràfic Foundation focuses on collaboration for the preservation and restoration of the Mata Atlántica in Iguazu (Argentina), one of the largest biodiversity areas on the planet.

The planned actions include forest restoration, the creation of corridors for fauna and the reintroduction of native species.

The active participation of local communities and the technical advice of the Oceanogràfic are essential for the success of these initiatives.
