Nature in conflict: ecosystem services versus extreme weather events
Scientists Antonio Camacho and Samira Khodayar will analyze the root causes of extreme weather events, exploring how climate change and ecological processes influence their frequency and intensity. In addition, they will address strategies to mitigate their impacts using the resources that nature provides. Through an ecosystem-based approach, they will highlight how wetlands, forests, and other natural environments act as natural barriers, regulating the water cycle, absorbing carbon, and protecting communities from floods, droughts, and heat waves, ultimately mitigating the effects of extreme weather events.
Samira Khodayar Pardo holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Karlsruhe and currently coordinates the Meteorology and Climatology area at the Center for Mediterranean Environmental Studies (CEAM).
Antonio Camacho González holds a PhD in Biological Sciences and is a Professor of Ecology at the University of Valencia, where he leads the Limnology group at the Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology.
