18 de June de 2025

  • The voyage will tour the Balearic Islands between August 7 and 10 with workshops and activities led by marine biologists from the Oceanogràfic, such as the release of a turtle.
  • The proposal is a scientific and sustainable experience for the general public, families, and sea lovers.

Valencia, June 17, 2025. The Camilo José Cela University and the Oceanogràfic Foundation presented today, aboard the Cervantes Saavedra training ship, the fifth edition of the Blue Planet Voyage. This nautical and informative proposal, aimed at the general public, will be held from August 7 to 10, 2025.

The event was attended by José Manuel Guzmán, captain of the Cervantes Saavedra schooner, and the biologists from the Oceanogràfic and its foundation, Rocío Pajares, Pablo López, Lorena Expósito, and Amparo Segurado, who detailed the educational and environmental nature of the project.

“Sailing on the Cervantes Saavedra allows you to discover the sea and learn to value and protect it,” said Guzmán. The Cervantes Saavedra Schooner is a training ship that is also one of the campuses of the Camilo José Cela University, in this case its campus on the sea. “Among the activities we carry out on the schooner, we would like to highlight, in addition to the Blue Planet voyage, the upcoming Navigators for History trip (prize of the contest of the same name organized by the Camilo José Cela University, the Royal Academy of History, and the Vicens Vives publishing house) and the activities that are part of the Summer SEK program (the summer courses of the SEK Schools),” the captain pointed out.

For her part, Rocío Pajares, a biologist from the Oceanogràfic, added that “we try to raise awareness of the marine world to the general public. We spend four days at sea, bringing families and groups of friends closer to marine species and their protection, and we do it on this schooner, which is a privileged place. These are four fantastic days, in which we learn many things, so we invite everyone to live the experience.” The biologist, Lorena Expósito, said that during the voyage there will be a turtle release, “a project that we carry out from the Oceanogràfic Foundation. In this case, we will release a turtle that is fully recovered. We want to publicize the work we do from our center so that society becomes aware of everything that is in the marine world.”

The Blue Planet Voyage is aimed at people of all ages interested in the conservation of the marine environment and life aboard a historic sailboat. For four days, participants will explore the Mediterranean and the Balearic Islands through environmental awareness activities, wildlife observation, citizen science, and coexistence at sea. The experience includes:

  • Workshops led by specialists from the Oceanogràfic.
  • Observation and identification of cetaceans and marine birds.
  • Study of microplastics and analysis of samples.
  • Active navigation and life on board in a coexistence regime.

This project, which has already completed five editions, is consolidated as an educational and sustainable leisure alternative in summer, which promotes contact with nature, experiential learning, and environmental awareness in an accessible and shared format between generations. The registration period is now open through the official website goletacervantes.es.

The Cervantes Saavedra Schooner is the training ship of the UCJC, a historic sailboat that acts as a campus at sea for educational, scientific, and cultural projects, offering unique training experiences on board. The UCJC belongs to the SEK Educational Institution, which has 15 schools in 7 countries (6 of them in Spain).

The Oceanogràfic Foundation, based in the Oceanogràfic of Valencia, combines research, dissemination, and conservation of the marine environment, promoting knowledge and protection of the oceans.
