Oceanogràfic Foundation and Red Cross Conclude Campaign in Nules to Raise Awareness about Dolphin and Turtle Strandings
25 de July de 2017

- The mayor, David García, and the Councilor for Tourism and Beaches, María Jesús Gabaldón, attended the simulation.
Last Sunday, Les Marines beach in Nules was the setting for the presentation of the latest awareness campaign on marine animal strandings, carried out by the Oceanogràfic Foundation and the Spanish Red Cross CV along the coasts of the Valencian Community.
The activity, which is part of the first summer awareness campaign on strandings, aims to make the public aware of the threats posed by humans to the oceans and how to behave when faced with a stranded animal on the beach.
Specialists from both entities carried out intervention simulations with turtles and cetaceans, providing relevant advice such as not overwhelming the animal, keeping it moist, not covering the dolphins’ blowhole, and notifying the Red Cross or calling 112, which will activate the resources of the Stranding Network, composed of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Territory and Environment, the University of Valencia, and the Oceanogràfic itself.
In addition, biological samples were explained and exhibited to all bathers on the beach of the Castellón municipality in an ad hoc tent.
The mayor of Nules, David García, and the Councilor for Tourism and Beaches of the city council, María Jesús Gabaldón, also attended the event.
First awareness campaign
The awareness events that have toured the beaches of the three Valencian provinces began in Gandia, followed by Oliva, Guardamar del Segura, Xàbia, Alcossebre, and now conclude in Nules. In each of the actions, environmental education has been imparted, and attendees have been able to follow training simulations to avoid damage to stranded marine species on the coasts in three 20-minute sessions each day, held at 11:15, 12:15, and 1:15 in the morning.
