El Campello Beach Records the Birth of 72 Sea Turtles

3 de September de 2025

On the morning of September 3, a new spontaneous nest of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) was recorded on El Campello beach, Alicante, with a total of 98 eggs and 72 hatchlings, two of which were still emerging from the sand at the time of the intervention.

In the count carried out by the team from the Oceanogràfic Foundation and the University of Valencia, 92 shells and 67 turtles were counted in the sand, in addition to five hatchlings that were released by individuals before the arrival of the technical team.

The final balance has been completed with four eggs with embryonic development and two eggs without a pole, that is, without possibilities of evolution.

Of the total number of turtles found on the beach, five of them have been transferred to the Oceanogràfic of Valencia (CACSA – GVA) to be part of the Head Starting program, which allows them to be raised in safe conditions for approximately one year until they reach a size that increases their chances of survival in the wild.

This new episode confirms the expansion of loggerhead sea turtle nesting on the Valencian coast, a phenomenon that is increasingly frequent on beaches in Castellón, Valencia and Alicante. The figure of 12 nests in the same summer constitutes a historical record in the Valencian Community.

The Oceanogràfic Foundation has underlined the relevance of citizen collaboration in these cases and reminds that, when detecting hatchlings or footprints in the sand, citizens should contact the Emergency telephone number 112 to activate the protection protocols of the Stranding Network.
