Today is a very special day for all the children of the Oceanogràfic Summer School.
The Oceanogràfic Summer School is a fun and dynamic way for the little ones to learn about the importance of conservation for the marine environment. To this end, they have shared the day-to-day with the walrus, dolphin, and seal caretakers, in addition to getting to know Kylu, the only baby beluga calf in all of Europe, firsthand.
In addition, they had their scuba diving baptism and learned to recognize different marine animals from our coasts, so they are now prepared to be little guardians of the sea.
Tonight has been different… sleeping under seven million liters of water, in the ocean tunnel, is not something that can be done every day. There they were able to enjoy some particular dream companions: bull sharks, guitarfish, and giant manta rays.
As a culmination, they are accompanying turtle 308 on its return to the sea today. This loggerhead turtle specimen Caretta caretta, which the children have named Picachu, entered the ARCA del Mar recovery center of the Oceanogràfic on February 16. It had been accidentally captured by a trawler in Calpe and showed symptoms of gas embolism. At the Oceanogràfic, the veterinarians applied the relevant treatment to achieve its full recovery, and once achieved, it returns to the sea to cheers from the little ones. They have learned a valuable lesson throughout this week; we all need the sea, and it, in turn, also needs us.
