The Oceanogràfic Foundation, in collaboration with the Department of Environment, will carry out a release of freshwater fauna as part of its programs for the conservation of threatened native species. The release will include specimens of samaruc (Valencia hispanica), a fish endemic to the Valencian Community and in danger of extinction, and European pond turtles (Emys orbicularis), raised in the facilities of the Oceanogràfic and the El Palmar Aquaculture Center.
The Oceanogràfic Foundation develops various conservation projects for freshwater species in the Valencian Community, focused on the breeding, recovery, and reintroduction of threatened native fauna. Among the protected species are the samaruc (Valencia hispanica), the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis), the gallipato (Pleurodeles waltl), and the freshwater clams known as petxinots (Unio mancus and Potomida littoralis).
