Nature-based solutions: when science is inspired by the ocean

Dr. Marta Coll is a scientific researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences of the CSIC (Barcelona), specializing in marine ecology, biodiversity, and fisheries management. Her work focuses on understanding how marine ecosystems interact with human activity and how this knowledge can be applied to the conservation and sustainability of the oceans. She has participated in numerous international projects, including the European FutureMares, aimed at evaluating and promoting Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). These solutions consist of using natural processes and ecosystems themselves—such as wetlands, seagrass beds, reefs, or mangroves—to address environmental, social, and economic challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and human well-being, offering sustainable and long-term alternatives to traditional approaches based solely on artificial infrastructures.
