How to Spot a Turtle Nest

The nesting season takes place from June to August

Every summer, the Mediterranean coasts can become the temporary home of sea turtles that come to our beaches to nest. Identifying and protecting a turtle nest is key to ensuring the survival of these endangered species.

Below, we explain how to recognize a nest and what to do if you find one.

What signs indicate the presence of a nest?

  • Tracks in the sand

Sea turtles leave characteristic tracks when they come out of the water and move along the beach. These tracks are usually "V" or "U" shaped and vary depending on the species.

  • Small depression or mound

In the place where the turtle digs to lay its eggs, a slight mound or a groove in the sand can be observed.

  • Shell fragments

Although less frequent, if the hatchlings have recently emerged, it is possible to find shell remains in the vicinity of the nest.

What to do if you find a nest?

  • Keep your distance

Observe from afar so as not to disturb the area or the turtles.

  • Avoid lights and noise

Light and noise can disorient both nesting females and hatchlings.

  • Do not handle the nest

Do not touch the sand or try to dig up the eggs, as you could damage them.

  • Inform the authorities

Report the finding immediately. Contact the Emergency telephone number 112 to activate the Stranding Network of the Valencian Community.
