{"id":5824,"date":"2025-06-16T13:53:34","date_gmt":"2025-06-16T11:53:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fundacionoceanografic.org\/blog\/agriculture-and-the-oceanografic-foundation-promote-the-recovery-of-sea-urchins-and-seahorses\/"},"modified":"2025-10-24T16:57:00","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T14:57:00","slug":"agriculture-and-the-oceanografic-foundation-promote-the-recovery-of-sea-urchins-and-seahorses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fundacionoceanografic.org\/en\/agriculture-and-the-oceanografic-foundation-promote-the-recovery-of-sea-urchins-and-seahorses\/","title":{"rendered":"Agriculture and the Oceanogr\u00e0fic Foundation Promote the Recovery of Sea Urchins and Seahorses"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul>\n<li><strong>This project seeks to contribute to the improvement of the marine environment in light of the decline of some of its populations in the Valencian Community<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>321 sea urchins and 9 seahorses raised at the Oceanogr\u00e0fic have been released\n<p><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Barrachina reiterates the defense of the fishing sector before the European Union and the Government of Spain<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Department of Agriculture, Water, Livestock and Fisheries, through the Directorate General of Fisheries and the Oceanogr\u00e0fic Foundation, are developing a pilot project focused on the reproduction, breeding and reintroduction of sea urchins on the coast of the Valencian Community, with the aim of reinforcing the populations of this species.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Agriculture, Miguel Barrachina, has stated that \u201cwith this project, the Department, together with the Oceanogr\u00e0fic Foundation, reaffirms its commitment to the conservation of the marine environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInitiatives like this allow us to advance in the recovery of sea urchin populations in the Valencian Community, guaranteeing the sustainability of our coastal ecosystems and working hand in hand with the fishing sector and the scientific community,\u201d the Minister highlighted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionoceanografic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Foto-de-grupo-en-la-embarcacion-antes-de-soltar-a-los-animales-scaled-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-61275 img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/fundacionoceanografic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Foto-de-grupo-en-la-embarcacion-antes-de-soltar-a-los-animales-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1690\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Miguel Barrachina made these statements during his visit to the Port of X\u00e0bia, where he participated, together with the Director of Fisheries, Miguel Castell, the mayor of the town, Rosa Cardona, the director of the Oceanogr\u00e0fic Foundation, Leocadia Garc\u00eda-Bartual, and the head of the fishermen&#8217;s association of X\u00e0bia, Rafael Serrat, in the release of 321 sea urchins and 9 seahorses. In addition, he supervised the release of a sea turtle that had been accidentally captured by fishermen and subsequently recovered in the Oceanogr\u00e0fic facilities. <\/p>\n<p>This is a pilot project to which the fishermen&#8217;s associations of X\u00e0bia and D\u00e9nia have joined, interested in collaborating in the fattening and subsequent release phases of these marine organisms, thus contributing to the conservation and recovery of the species.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionoceanografic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Caballitos-de-mar-antes-de-soltarse-al-mar-scaled-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-61276 img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/fundacionoceanografic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Caballitos-de-mar-antes-de-soltarse-al-mar-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The breeders are captured in the same areas where they will later be released. During the first stages of development, the larvae are raised in tanks and fed with microalgae cultivated in the Oceanogr\u00e0fic de Val\u00e8ncia facilities. As they grow, the small larvae descend to the bottom of the aquarium and begin their transformation. When they reach the appropriate size, the specimens can be returned to the sea.   <\/p>\n<p>Barrachina stressed that \u201cthe commitment and collaboration of the fishing sector are essential for the rescue of marine fauna and to facilitate the transfer of specimens to the Oceanogr\u00e0fic de Val\u00e8ncia recovery center.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Minister highlighted that \u201cMediterranean fishing, in addition to being an economic, tourist, cultural and gastronomic engine for our region, also plays a key role in the conservation of the marine environment.
